Fractal analysis of tree paintings by Piet Mondrian (1872-1944)

چکیده
We examine two paintings by Piet Mondrian, and suggest that his depiction of tree foliages exhibit fractal patterns of a specific dimension. Our analysis implies that fractality may possess an aesthetic value that affected Mondrian, perhaps in a similar way as it inspired Jackson Pollock, another famous painter who incorporated fractality in several of his paintings. In recent years there has been a stimulating debate among scientists arguing for and against the thesis that Jackson Pollock’s drip paintings when analysed at small scales can be described by the mathematics of fractal geometry. Our suggestion that fractal patterns exist in the paintings of a second famous artist–in this case Piet Mondrian–further supports the hypothesis that the beauty which exists in fractality may affect consciously or subconsciously such great painters as Jackson Pollock and Piet Mondrian.

متن کاملAn oblique effect in aesthetics: homage to Mondrian (1872-1944).
The effect of the orientation of Mondrian's paintings on their aesthetic appeal was examined. Eight paintings, four with horizontal/vertical frames in the original and four with oblique frames, were presented in eight different orientations and rated for aesthetic appeal on a 7-point scale. There was a stronger preference for pictures presented so that their component lines were horizontal and ...
متن کاملWhen Viewing Variations in Paintings by Mondrian, Aesthetic Preferences Correlate With Pupil Size
Observers consciously prefer Mondrian’s paintings in their original orientation compared with a rotated position—the “oblique effect” (Latto, Brain, & Kelly, 2000). However, this finding’s premise, that all vertical–horizontal orientations of the thick black lines in Mondrian’s oeuvre are preferred, overlooks the fact that the overall balance of these images is also altered when they are reorie...
متن کاملPreference for and Discrimination of Paintings by Mice
I measured preference for paintings (Renoir vs. Picasso or Kandinsky vs. Mondrian) in mice. In general mice did not display a painting preference except for two mice: one preferred Renoir to Picasso, and the other preferred Kandinsky to Mondrian. Thereafter, I examined discrimination of paintings with new mice. When exposure to paintings of one artist was associated with an injection of morphin...
